Name: Ryan McCurdy
Hometown: Savannah, GA
Education: BFA, Performing Arts, Savannah College of Art and Design
Select Credits: Gypsy of the Year 2014 (Broadway), Twelfth Night (Center Stage, Baltimore), What I Meant Was... (Manhattan Theatre Source, New York), No Fear Shakespeare's Richard III (4th Street Theatre, New York)
Why theater?: Everything in this world is storytelling and theatre is the purest version I've found.
Who do you play in The Butter and Egg Man?: Oscar Fritchie, the mild-mannered deus ex machina! #nospoilers
Tell us about The Butter and Egg Man?: It's a very funny comedy by the brilliant George S. Kaufman. The characters as sharp as tacks, the story makes sense no matter how insane things get, and the play-within-the-play sounds like the greatest stage disaster ever conceived. #stageofglass
What is it like being a part of The Butter and Egg Man?: Retro is a very positive company to work with and they do a great job of putting very kind, talented people in the rehearsal room together. This is a joy.
What kind of theater speaks to you? What or who inspires you as an artist?: I'd like to think I keep my senses as open as possible for inspiration. My first solo album was named Dopp (after the slang name for toiletry kits) and I wrote a play in college about the use of Via Negativa in the search for God. As long as i know how much I want to keep learning, I'll be alright.
Any roles you’re dying to play?: Bat Boy, Adult Tommy, and a pivotal role in the next big as-of-now unwritten rock opera.
What’s your favorite showtune?: "Heaven on Their Minds" from Jesus Christ Superstar. No question.
If you could work with anyone you’ve yet to work with, who would it be?: Bill Irwin
Who would play you in a movie about yourself and what would it be called?: Freddie Highmore and it would definitely be called "Varnishing Days".
If you could go back in time and see any play or musical you missed, what would it be?: Opening night of The Secret Garden on Broadway.
What show have you recommended to your friends?: We're all about Broadway's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and I just saw an incredible new play called peerless by Jiehae Park that will be part of Yale Rep's next season.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?: Kraft Macaroni & Cheese!
What’s up next?: Recording an EP with my rock band Bonfire Falls and continuing to workshop the new trans-media project The Skype Show with Jody Christopherson.
