Name: Ryan Guess
Hometown: Detroit, Michigan
Education: BA Theatre Performance and Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University and an MFA from The University of Connecticut.
Select Credits: Doc Miller in War Wound. A play about the initial invasion of Iraq after 9/11. Written by one of my best friends who's a Veteran. The commanding General of US Marine logistics tried to shut our production down.
Why theater?: Because telling a good story is extremely important. The right story can change someone's life.
Who do you play in The Tunnel Play?: Colin
Tell us about The Tunnel Play: Its a smart and gritty show that proves how dangerous and desperate life can be for anyone. The lives of 4 very different characters collide as the storm of the century approaches and hits New York City.
What is it like being a part of The Tunnel Play?: Its an exciting and socially relevant piece with powerful characters. What's better than that?! Also, multiple times now in the middle of rehearsal during a heated scene a real storm would break out in NYC. Thats fun stuff.
What kind of theater speaks to you? What or who inspires you as an artist?: Theater that provides the audience with an necessary experience. To provoke questions or to simply show examples of the human condition so others can grow, learn or simply contemplate the issues. Humans are creatures who learn from their mistakes, I hope. Theater is a platform to entertain but also to learn from the characters passion and everything that entails. This might have been answer for "why theater?". I think an artist is cursed and blessed by having the inherent ability to be inspired and devastated by what he or she sees in the everyday. Plays are short but life is long complicated and of course inspiring.
Any roles you’re dying to play?: I'd like to play Robert Kennedy in a play that hasn't been written yet.
What’s your favorite showtune?: The theme from "Cheers".
If you could work with anyone you’ve yet to work with, who would it be?: David Hyde Pierce.
Who would play you in a movie about yourself and what would it be called?: Walter Matthau in "Ya Shmuck"
What show have you recommended to your friends?:"X-Files"
What’s the most played song on your iTunes?: I'm a Pandora man. Lately it's been Closure at Moscow, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and the Indiana Jones soundtrack
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?: I'm pleading not guilty.
What’s up next?:Good Grief at The Intar Theatre and Since I've Been Here at The New York New Works Festival & The Manhattan Rep.
